WINFIELD CASEY JONES
Reaffirmation of our Position on Membership and Ordination Standards
Background: It appears likely that a majority of the 173 presbyteries in the Presbyterian Church (USA) will approve a change in language for ordination standards for ministers, elders, and deacons recommended by The General Assembly in 2010. In all, since the General Assembly meeting, 55% of the total number of commissioners voting in presbyteries have been approving the amendment. While our presbytery disapproved the amendment, nearby presbyteries in San Antonio and South Louisiana did narrowly approve it. If this change occurs, the ordination standards will change from “living in fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness” to “joyfully submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.” This would remove a national standard categorically prohibiting the ordination of persons in sexual relationships outside of marriage between a man and a woman. Our Session’s View: THE GRACE OF GOD
We believe that God's grace is big enough to forgive any sin. We believe that God's grace is big enough to change any sinner.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in First Presbyterian Church of Pearland is open to all sinners who need a Savior. We agree with St. Augustine who said, "the church is a hospital for sinners." We believe that in this hospital (which is the Church) the Lord is not only forgiving us, but gradually healing us and curing us of sin so that eventually we will be like Christ. (Romans 8:29
LEADERSHIP
We believe that spiritual leaders, while still sinners, need to have travelled some distance in their spiritual journey towards Christ. The session of First Presbyterian Church of Pearland affirms that it continues to be our understanding of Scripture that all Christians, and especially leaders such as ministers, elders and deacons, as forgiven sinners, should live either in chastity in singleness or fidelity in marriage between a man and a woman. Since the Presbyterian Church (USA) seems to be shifting the authority for applying its ordination standards from the national level to the local presbytery and session level, and since this represents a de-centralization of the church, the session feels it important to remind our congregation that under our Constitution, no minister can be called to serve this church without the congregation’s “yes” vote. Also the congregation elects all its elders and deacons. Therefore the congregation’s traditional understanding of Scripture will continue to govern this church. As the governing body of this congregation, the session unconditionally affirms the high Biblical standards to which church leaders continue to be called by God and affirms its belief that these standards will continue to govern our congregation as we continue to live in and under God’s amazing grace.
